FAQ
We believe in supporting local farmers and the local community. Each box of local, organic produce you buy from us not only helps a local farmer earn extra income, but you’re providing healthy food for another Austin family in need. It’s a win-win!
Currently, Good Apple delivers to all of Travis County. If you live outside Travis County but are interested in our service, send us an email at contact@goodapplefoods.com or join our mailing list at goodapplefoods.com.
Food insecurity means not having access to enough nutritious food for an active, healthy life. Unfortunately, Travis County has some of the highest rates of food insecurity in the country. Around 171,000 Austinites, including over 53,000 children, are unsure of where their next meal is coming from.
In normal, non-COVID-19 times, Good Apple works closely with pediatricians' offices to identify families facing food insecurity. The health team conducts a food insecurity screening, and if a family screens positive, they are referred to Good Apple's service. We don't allow direct referrals to our services at this time.
However, during COVID-19, we've launched our "Stay Home, Stay Healthy" grocery delivery program to provide short term food assistance to the elderly and the immunocompromised. You can learn more about this new initiative at goodapplefoods.com/covid-19 and refer people you know who might be in need!
First, you’ll want to sign up for a delivery service-- you can choose a weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly delivery (every 4 weeks). Then, each week, we’ll work with our partner farms to identify fruits and veggies they have for sale. We curate a box complete with leafy greens, vegetables, fruits, and fresh herbs that provides a balanced variety of produce. And finally, we’ll deliver all the local goodness straight to your door! For every box you buy from us, we’ll also send another box of fresh food directly to a family in need.
When a farmer grows their fruits and veggies, they sometimes have a hard time selling some of their produce to big grocery stores due to grocers’ strict cosmetic standards. Sometimes a tomato grows a little too big or too small or not the perfect shade of color. Other times, a farmer may slightly over- or under-produce a crop and need to quickly sell it to a different buyer. In many of these cases, if the farmer cannot find a customer, the farmer is forced to waste perfectly delicious produce.
At Good Apple, we work with local farmers to rescue this produce that would otherwise go unsold and connect it with subscribers who are eager to eat fresh, local food.
We currently offer two different produce box options: "The OG" and "The Individual". The OG has enough fruits and veggies for 2-3 people for one week (about 10-13 lbs of produce). The Individual box has enough fruits and veggies for 1-2 people for one week (about 5-8 lbs of produce).
Each week we source a variety of produce items to keep our box fun and practical for everyday cooking needs. We also include weekly recipe cards to showcase the more unique items, providing a fun way to learn more about your produce!
Our team curates our produce boxes on a weekly basis with a variety of locally sourced, in-season leafy greens (like kale, collards, bok choy, and green leaf lettuce), vegetables (like carrots, potatoes, and eggplant), fruits (like oranges, peaches, and grapefruit), and herbs (like cilantro, parsley, oregano, and dill).
Check out what's in the upcoming box on our weekly updated produce list page!
Yes! All of our produce is sourced from local farms who use organic and sustainable farming practices.
We believe local food not only tastes better but is also better for our community. We try to source all of our produce within a 180 mile radius of Travis County whenever possible, though we do work with our partners in other parts of Texas to source certain items (e.g., citrus fruit from South Texas).
